c. 1860 
George C. Ballou (b.1798 in Cumberland, d.1876), manufacturer and industrialist. Built several mills in the area, 
including the Ballou Mill in 1846 which is depicted on the city seal. In 1873 built the new Globe (stone) Mill which 
manufactured cotton. His home was the former Cephas Holbrook house, also known as the Stone House, at the 
corner of South Main and Mason Streets.
